Empowering Women in the Blue Economy Interlligence Gathering and Capacity Boosting Online Conference
Women are agents of change towards a more sustainable Europe. The workshop aimed to explore the role of women in the evolution and development of the blue economy, considering the new growth challenges following the pandemic and the impact of climate change on the maritime and shipping sector. In particular, significant constraints for women will be discussed, as well as strategies and projects to improve action in training, capacity building, technical cooperation and access to finance. The ultimate goal is to raise awareness on gender mainstreaming in the maritime economy. The project was organise online on 23 October 2023, however, there was a live audience at Federazione de Mar in Rome, Italy.
The workshop also aimed to promote an interactive discussion between public and private stakeholders, facilitating the exchange of current good practices and lessons learnt by participants, providing a snapshot of the blue economy under the gender lens and the challenges for women in the marine economy. A special focus on the two EU co-funded twin projects WINBIG and WIN-BLUE and the state of the art in the maritime transport, ports and fisheries sectors in Italy with the participation of WISTA - Italy.
The workshop is conceived on the basis of the European Commission's call for ‘Women in the Blue Economy’ launched on 17 May 2022 and, more generally, on Next Generation EU as it is strongly linked to progress in the double transitions, foreseeing a broad adoption of the gender mainstreaming approach in the sector.
