Women Ocean Champions

Stories of Women Shaping the EU Blue Economy

Women Ocean Champions

Women Ocean Champions is a story-led book that puts women’s voices at the centre of Europe’s ocean economy. Inside, you’ll find 100 first-person stories and portraits from women working across Blue Economy sectors and sea basins—each one showing a different route into ocean careers, and a different way of creating impact.

This isn’t a catalogue of “perfect” CVs. It’s a collection of real journeys, full of decisions, detours, breakthroughs, trade-offs, and the kind of persistence it takes to stay and lead in spaces that haven’t always felt welcoming. The common thread is not one job title, but a shared commitment to the ocean and to building a more sustainable future through everyday work.

Why this book matters

The Blue Economy influences how we produce food, move goods, develop energy, protect ecosystems, and support coastal livelihoods. Yet opportunities and visibility in ocean sectors remain uneven—especially when it comes to career progression and leadership. This book makes women’s contribution visible in the most direct way possible: by letting women tell their own stories and by offering role models that other women (and the sector as a whole) can actually recognise themselves in.

Women Ocean Champions was created within the WIN-BIG project, an EU-funded initiative working to gather updated data on gender balance and strengthen women’s inclusion in Blue Economy sectors while addressing persistent barriers across Europe.
