Understanding gender in the Blue Economy
The Blue Economy is evolving rapidly across Europe, creating new opportunities in sectors ranging from marine biotechnology and renewable energy to fisheries, tourism and ocean technology. Yet women remain underrepresented in many areas of the sector, especially in technical, leadership and decision-making roles.
As part of the WIN-BIG project, we carried out an extensive survey and data analysis focused on gender in the Blue Economy across the six European sea basins: Atlantic, Arctic, Baltic, Black Sea, Mediterranean and North Sea.
The result is a collection of regional reports and visual infographics offering evidence-based insights into the gender landscape of Europe’s Blue Economy.
These reports provide valuable evidence for policymakers, researchers, educators, industry actors and organisations working to build a more inclusive and sustainable Blue Economy. Together, they offer both a snapshot of the current situation and a foundation for future policy and action.
Shaping a more inclusive Blue Economy
The transition towards a sustainable Blue Economy also requires a more diverse and equitable workforce.

Economy.
