Get ready to celebrate World Maritime Day!
Every year, on the last Thursday of September, the global maritime community comes together to mark World Maritime Day. This day was first observed in 1978 to commemorate the adoption of the IMO Convention, which took place 20 years earlier, in 1958.
Created to recognise the significant role the maritime industry plays in the world's economy, over the years World Maritime Day has grown into an annual event that highlights the critical work of the IMO and the global maritime community in maintaining the safety and sustainability of international shipping. World Maritime Day is more than just a day of recognition; it serves as a reminder of the maritime industry’s vital contribution to global trade and the economy. Around 90% of the world’s goods are transported by sea, making maritime transport the backbone of global commerce. The day also highlights the importance of sustainable practices as the industry continues to innovate and adapt to address environmental challenges, including reducing emissions and minimizing marine pollution.
Each year, World Maritime Day has a specific theme chosen by the IMO to address current issues and challenges facing the maritime industry. These themes often focus on topics such as sustainable shipping, gender equality, safety at sea, and the protection of marine environments. By dedicating a day to these important issues, the IMO and the international community seek to raise awareness and foster collaboration among governments, industry stakeholders, and the public.
For WIN-BIG, World Maritime Day is a moment to reflect on the ongoing efforts to create a more inclusive and sustainable Blue Economy. As we work to advance gender equality within the maritime sector, we recognize the importance of diversity and inclusion in driving innovation and achieving long-term sustainability. Women continue to play a crucial role in maritime operations, from engineering and navigation to leadership and policy-making, and our mission is to support their growth and success in this dynamic industry.
Join us as we remember the seafarers, engineers, scientists, and all maritime professionals who work tirelessly to keep the global economy moving and our oceans safe. Let’s also commit to fostering a more equitable and sustainable future for the maritime industry, where everyone has the opportunity to thrive.
