Honoring Seafarers: Advancing Gender Equality and Safety in the Blue Economy

On June 25th, we join the global community in celebrating the Day of the Seafarer.

Honoring Seafarers: Advancing Gender Equality and Safety in the Blue Economy

Established in a resolution adopted by the 2010 Diplomatic Conference in Manila to adopt the revised International Convention on Standards of Training, Certification and Watchkeeping for Seafarers (STCW), this day is dedicated to recognising seafarers' vital contributions to international trade, the global economy, and, particularly, the European Blue Economy.

Two million people operate the ships that carry more than 80% of the volume of world trade. Today, we want to honour their dedication and resilience while highlighting women seafarers' crucial role in this traditionally male-dominated industry.

Seafarers are the backbone of the Blue Economy, which encompasses a range of maritime industries essential to Europe’s economic health.

“Without seafarers, there would be no shipping, no shopping and no supply chain”

Arsenio Dominguez, IMO Secretary-General

Despite progress in various sectors, it remains one of the most challenging environments for achieving gender equality. According to the latest data, women represent only a small fraction of the global seafaring workforce, and their roles are often limited by traditional gender norms and barriers.

Within the European Union, women seafarers are predominantly found in roles such as cruise ship staff, ferry workers, and support positions in various maritime operations. However, their presence in technical and leadership positions remains minimal.

This year, we also support the IMO's #SafetyTipsAtSea campaign. We encourage all seafarers to share pictures of themselves in their working environment along with their top safety tips. Safety is paramount in the maritime industry, and it's essential to address specific safety concerns for women seafarers, ensuring they have access to safe and supportive working conditions at sea.
